Door Locks-Hardware

Locking things up

Typical front door lock

Door locks-hardware have actually been around for quite a long time.  Some person with something very precious to protect came up with a basic wooden pin-lock mechanism around 6000 years ago in Mesopotamia. That lock was opened with a wooden key. What’s surprising is the mechanics haven’t really changed much in all that time. Most homes today still use a pin-lock cylinder mechanism just like that only in metal. Ours open with a metal key. If you are like most homeowners, you probably have a key for your front door.

Hinges, latches, knobs, levers and strikes are all types of door and window hardware. These items allow the door or window to repetitively swing and latch in an open or closed position. They are also subjected to a lot of abuse and wear thus their name.  The invention of metal was a huge advancement for door hardware because of its strength and durability. It is almost impossible to wear out a pair of metal hinges.  Metal was so important for this application that almost all hardware today is made of it. The challenge today is to choose the right metal for the job. Regular steel hardware works fine under most conditions, but for wet ares or marine and seaside construction you will need stainless steel. You can order stainless steel door hinges here from Amazon.

Maintenance

  • 1x per year: You want to keep your door lock working smoothly, so keep the screws tight and apply an occasional lubrication with a special lock lubricant that won’t gum up the works.

New lock technology

Lately technology finally has begun to change the way we lock up. Homes can now be fit with electronic lock mechanisms and some even have biometric sensors instead of keys. If you lose keys frequently, one of these high-tech solutions may be in your future.

New security devices like low-cost video monitors and doorbells that allow you to see and talk to anyone at the front door on your phone. I have a Ring doorbell on my home and like being able to see and record everyone that comes to the front door.  With the help of these devices, your current lock should continue to serve you well. Maybe for another 6000 years or so? Get a Ring video monitored doorbell at Amazon.
